Tips for Visiting a Nursing Home Resident

When visiting our nursing home members, we know that family and friends want to make the most of their visit. Providing support and companionship is an essential part of ensuring a strong recovery and positive attitude throughout a members stay. Check out these tips to make your visit count:
1.Plan in Advance – By knowing ahead of time when you plan to stop by, members get the enjoyment of anticipating your visit. Planning ahead will also allow you to pick the best time of day for the member.
2. Know how long you plan to stay – Some members do not have the strength or ability to remain engaged for long visits. Plan your visit for a set amount of time, whether a half hour or an hour, and stick to your schedule. Knowing what limitation you can expect will help you to use your time wisely.
3.Talk with the member – Our members want to be able to speak and interact with their family and friends. Talking to members in a quiet area, and keeping in touch with the member through gestures such as hand holding, will provide positive interactions that leave a lasting impression.
4. Bring your children – Whether as a teaching moment or simply a regular visit, bringing children to a visit always brightens a member’s day. Children’s art work is a great way to brighten a member’s room, and allow them to keep in touch with their family.
Whenever you visit one of our nursing homes, you are reinforcing to your relative that they are still an important part of the family. Your visit is itself a gift, and visits from family and friends can truly make a members day. Enjoy your time with our members, and just be yourself!
