Improving Your Brain Power
Improving Your Brain Power

No matter your age, improving and tuning up the brain can result in a longer, healthier, and more fulfilled life. While genetics and personal history have some influence on brain health, you can still take steps to keep your brain healthy and prevent deteriorating brain conditions. These steps include preventative measures as well as activities that will keep your brain moving. Some of the simplest ways to avoid possibly life-threatening issues include the following:
1. Maintain regular check-ups with your health care professional, and be aware of medicines you take – even over the counter medicines and supplements.
2. Maintain a healthy weight and eat healthy foods. Vitamins such as antioxidants, vitamin E, niacin, and other nutrients have a direct role in supporting brain function.
3. Immediately notify your health care professional if you experience any signs of changes in your brain: increased forgetfulness, sadness, vision or hearing changes, fatigue, headache, or weakness in your limbs are just a few possible signs of brain health issues.
4. Stay physically active. Even just 30 minutes of physical activity a day can improve your body and mind!
5. Use your brain. Participate in mentally stimulating activities, such as cross words, Sudoku, or board games.
6. Keep reading and engaging in thoughtful ways. Books are a great way to stimulate your imagination, or even attending a lecture or seminar on an interesting topic.
7. Keep up with friends and family, and participate in social events, clubs and community events.
8. Get adequate rest. Sleep has a huge influence on brain health, and getting enough sleep is the key to keeping fit.
9. Minimize stress and manage your stressful activities through meditation or talking it out with a friend.
Many elderly citizens remain alert and active even in their later years. Maintaining brain health at every age will contribute to increased quality of life, and continuing to exercise your brain will continue to benefit your mental and physical strength.
